How to Create Dashboard in Power BI

Step 1: Download & Install Power BI Desktop

Visit the Power BI Website: Go to the official website of Power BI.

Download: Next step is to click on the button titled 'Download free', which is under Power BI Desktop.

Install: Navigate through the installation instructions to help install Power BI Desktop on the computer.

Step 2: Connect to Data Sources

Open Power BI Desktop: After installation, the first step is to launch the application.

Get Data: Click on 'Get Data' available in the Home ribbon. Power BI renders support to multiple data sources like SQL Server, Excel, Azure, Web and more.

Opt Data Source: Pick the apt data source type. For instance, those using Excel should click on 'Excel' > then navigate to the file > open it.

Load Data: Pick the sheets or tables that are to be imported > then click 'Load'.

Step 3: Transform & Clean Data

Power Query Editor: Tap on 'Transform Data'. This will open the Power Query Editor.

Clean Data: Employ the available tools for cleaning and transforming the data. This can also incorporate filtering rows, removing duplicates, splitting columns, etc.

Apply Changes: Once the data is clean, click on 'Close & Apply'. This will save the changes as well as load the data into Power BI.

Step 4: Create Visualizations

Report View: Find way through to the Report View where one can commence creating visualizations.

Select Fields: Go to Fields pane > select the data fields that are to be used.

Pick Visualization Type: Go to the Visualizations pane > pick the type of graph or chart that needs to be created (for instance, pie chart, bar chart, map, etc.).

Step 6: Publish to Power BI Service

Save the Work: Ensure to save the Power BI Desktop file (.pbix) on a regular basis.

Sign In: Tap on 'Sign In' (available in the top-right corner of Power BI Desktop) > enter the Power BI account credentials.

Publish: Tap on 'Publish' in the Home ribbon. Pick the workspace available in the Power BI Service where the report needs to be published.

Step 7: Create the Dashboard

Access Power BI Service: Open the web browser > go to Power BI Service.

Navigate to Workspace: Visit the workspace where the report is published.

Open Report: Tap on the saved report to open it.

Pin Visuals to Dashboard: Hover over the intended visual > click on the pin icon. This will add it to a new/ existing dashboard. This step has to be repeated for every visual wanted on the dashboard.

Create New Dashboard: During creation of a new dashboard, a name has to be given when prompted.

Step 8: Customize the Dashboard

Edit Dashboard: Tap on the new dashboard. This will open it in edit mode.

Arrange Tiles: Drag and resize tiles. This will create a layout to highlight key metrics.

Add Tiles: Click on 'Add Tile'. This will include more elements like images, text boxes, KPIs or web content.

Set Alerts: Configure alerts on certain tiles to receive notifications as data reaches set thresholds. Tap on the ellipsis (...) found on a tile > select 'Manage Alerts'.

Step 9: Share the Dashboard

Share Dashboard: Tap on the 'Share' button situated at the top of your dashboard.

Invite Users: Insert the colleagues/ stakeholders' email addresses that the dashboard will be shared to. Pick their permission level (which is, view or edit).

Generate Link: Alternatively, a shareable link can be generated to be sent to users.

Embed Dashboard: Embed the dashboard in an app or website through the embed code offered in Power BI Service.

Step 10: Monitor & Update

Monitor Usage: Utilize the dashboard usage metrics available in Power BI Service. This will help see how the users interact with the dashboard.

Refresh Data: Schedule timely data refreshes. This will ensure that the dashboard constantly displays the current information. Go to Power BI Service > go to the dataset settings > configure the refresh schedule.

Make Improvements: Garner feedback from all users to make needed enhancements. The Power BI Desktop file can be updated or the report can be republished. All the changes get reflected on the dashboard.
